From the community, for the community

HOUSE DISTRICT 50

Kailua – Kāne’ohe Bay – Marine Corps Base Hawai’i

Representative Natalia Hussey-Burdick

Natalia Hussey-Burdick, D - Kailua, currently serves as the Representative for District 50 in the Hawai'i State House of Representatives. District 50 encompasses Kailua Town, portions of Kāne'ohe Bay, and Marine Corps Base Hawai’i. Born and raised in Kailua to politically active parents Ramona Hussey and Alan Burdick, Natalia felt compelled to run to find solutions to perennial issues that the legislature fails to resolve, and was elected in November 2022.

“I’ve worked for several years in supporting roles for legislators, candidates, and causes but have been encouraged by neighbors, family, and friends to take the logical next step to actually take a seat at the table and become a stronger voice for our community” -Rep NHB

Before entering politics, Rep. Hussey-Burdick graduated from the University of Hawai'i with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology in 2016. She was preparing to attend medical school, while volunteering as a Guardian Ad Litem representing children in foster care as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA).

In 2017, she entered politics as a Legislative Aide to former State Senator Laura Thielen, D - Waimānalo, where she discovered her passion for working in the legislature. She later served as Committee Clerk for the House Committee on Veterans and Military Affairs and assisted in drafting legislation to help veterans. She successfully drafted and supported the passage of HB2697 (2018 Act 52) establishing the biennial Veteran’s Summit.

“I enjoyed working on veterans affairs because the topic touched on so many important issues and public services including mental health, homelessness, education, and human health services. It taught me the true domestic and foreign costs of war. Our veterans and their families sacrifice so much to defend our country and our institutions - it’s our duty to take care of them when they come home.” - Rep. NHB

In 2021, Hussey-Burdick was nominated by Honolulu City Councilmember Esther Kia'āina and confirmed by the Honolulu City Council to serve on a nine member Council Reapportionment Commission responsible for redrawing Council district boundaries.

"As a Redistricting Commissioner, I felt that it was our responsibility to preserve communities of similar interest and to align them in accordance with the traditional Hawaiian ahupua'a system. We need representatives who view community problems comprehensively, who are going to be focused on all issues from the mountains to the ocean - mauka to makai - from the windward to the leeward side.” -Rep. NHB
